Brief Introduction

  • "Prof Stephen is whom I would really call life changing." —PL4214 Evolutionary Psychology student (summertime of 2011)
  • "Great paper! I had actually given up on the idea that retrieval practice might in part be the explaining factor behind the teaching effect..." —Associate Editor of Applied Cognitive Psychology (18 April 2018)
  • "You have been very influential in how we [the Brunel Academy for Transformation of Teaching] are developing." —Vice-Provost (Education) of Brunel University London (3 June 2019)

Assoc Prof Dr. Stephen Lim's lab gained international prominence upon discovering and reporting retrieval effects in the learning-by-teaching (LBT) instructional strategy. Within three years, his retrieval hypothesis rose as one of the top three theories driving the entire field of LBT research. Dr. Lim advances a translational educational science at university-, national-, regional-, and international-levels, redefining the concept of teaching excellence and influencing educational practice and policy. Formerly Chair of the NUS Teaching Academy and subsequently Founding President of the Singapore National Academy of Higher Education, he mentors institutions in the Asian Universities Alliance network, and develops teaching academies around the globe.

Dr. Lim has a particular passion for the arts in higher education. Beyond an all-round talent for university administration, research, and education, he is an accomplished musician, as talked about in national news.

Current Research

Education is vital for flourishing—the ultimate goal of human life. Research at CogEduLab@NUS aims to improve educational processes and outcomes in the real world by rethinking how human cognition seems to work from an evolutionary perspective, and then designing, developing, and deploying often "counterintuitive" interventions. For one, when students teach from memory, they learn better. Our work has appeared in such top international journals as Educational Psychologist, Journal of Educational Psychology, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. At CogEduLab@CHULA, we focus on translating current findings by publishing short, accessible articles in lay language for schools and our wider Thai communities.

We welcome dialogues and potential collaborations on all things related to education.
