I have been teaching at NUS since 1998, following six years of work in Vietnam and Laos. Ever since I was a teenager my life has been centered around Southeast Asia, beginning with Vietnamese refugees resettled in the US and continuing with an academic career in linguistics and history.

My main research project is currently a history of the Thai monarchy in the 20th century. I am also working on an article about Vietnam in the 10th century and have completed pieces on the historiography of Champa and the Nam tien process in Vietnamese history.
