Brief Introduction Top

I am teaching German as a foreign language at the NUS since I joined the European Studies Programme as a Fellow in June 1997. I became a lecturer in 1998 and was transferred to the new Centre for Language Studies, (CLS) in 2001. At present, I am Convenor for German language at the Centre.

I graduated with a direct Master’s degree (Magistra Artium) in German Language and Literature, Romance Language and Literature and Educational Theory from the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster,
Germany, in 1995. During the time of my studies, I spend one year as a guest student at the Universidad de Granada, Spain, to improve my language skills and to study Spanish language and literature at the Faculdad de Filología y Letras.

Upon the completion of my degree studies in Münster, I was selected by the university’s Language Centre to take part in their exchange programme with the Department of Germanics at the University of Washington, Seattle.  One year later, in 1996, I graduated from UW with a Master’s Degree, specializing in German 18th and 19th century literature.

During my years of studies abroad, I have been teaching German at the Goethe-Institute in Granada, Spain, and the University of Washington, Seattle.

I am editorial board member of e-FLT, Electronic Journal of Foreign Language Teaching (URL: http://e-flt.nus.edu.sg) and member of PacCALL (URL: http://www.paccall.org).

We are also looking into review and assessment citeria that will lead to better quality control and maintanance among our numerous part time staff.

Current Research Top

At present, I am investigating the impact of the application of ICT in foreign language teaching on learners' listening comprenehsion skills. I am planning to do my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Hermann Funk of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany, in this area.

Research Interests Top

I am interested in the impact of instructional technologies and infomation and communication technologies on foreign language teaching and learning. Of particular interest are the establishment of didactic design-principles for the development of network-based interactive learning materials and the effectiveness of such learning materials for learners.

I am also interested in process-oriented learning, learner autonomy, curriculum development, syllabus design and materials development.
