Brief Introduction

I have been teaching at the National University of Singapore since 1992. Prior to that I taught at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Malaya. Currently I am jointly appointed to the Department of Malay Studies at NUS, which I also headed from 2007 till 2013.

Teaching Areas

In the years that I have been teaching at NUS, I have taught a wide range of courses that cover fields such as sociological theory, interpretive methods, msociology of religion, development studies, and the study of Malay and Muslim civilizations.

Current Research

My current projects are on decolonial and autonomous knowledge, with an emphasis on the history of anti-colonial thought and the implications of these historical roots for concept formation and theory building in the tradition of autonomous knowledge.

Research Interests

My areas of interest are the sociology of Islam, social theory, religion and reform, intra- and inter-religious dialogue, and the sociology and political economy of knowledge production.
