Brief Introduction

A/P Luke O'Sullivan is a historian of ideas (covering roughly the period since 1800) with particular interests in philosophy and politics. He has published articles in journals including Journal of the History of Ideas, History and Theory, History of Political Thought, Intellectual History Review, British Journal of the History of Philosophy, and History of European Ideas.

A/P O'Sullivan is author of a monograph on Michael Oakeshott entitled Oakeshott on History (2003). This was the first work to explore Oakeshott's thought on the nature of historical understanding and on the history of European political theory at length. The monograph has since led to a major editorial project in the form of a series of Oakeshott's Selected Writings. Six volumes in this series have been published to date. The most recent volume, consisting of selections from Oakeshott's previously unpublished notebooks, was published in 2014 as Notebooks, 1922-86, and has been widely reviewed in the press, including The Times Literary Supplement.

In addition, A/P O'Sullivan has co-edited a volume of Bentham's Correspondence for the years 1824-28 in the series of the Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham published by Oxford University Press. He has also been a regular reviewer for Political Studies, The British Journal for the History of Philosophy, and Philosophy in Review, amongst others.


Teaching Areas

At NUS, A/P O'Sullivan has taught courses on subjects including Democratic Theory (P3232); International Political Theory (PS4213); Politics and Rhetoric (PS4220); Politics and Visual Culture (PS3260); Twentieth-Century International Thought (PS4288); Politics on Screen (PS2256); Thomas Hobbes (PS4217F); Politics, Music, and Society (PS3266); and Research Design (PS5111). His teaching has been recognized with three consecutive FASS Teaching Excellence Awards (2009-11).

A/P O'Sullivan has previously lectured and directed seminars at both undergraduate and graduate level at University College London, Kingston University, and Reading University. Subjects he taught at these universities include Political Thought from Plato to Marx; Romanticism; The Philosophy of History; and The Age of Revolution in Britain, France, and America.


Current Research

 

A/P O'Sullivan is currently working on two papers in the field of visual studies, one on embodiment and contemporary art, the other on the the political documentary film-maker Adam Curtis. His long-term research aim is the completion of a monograph on the history of the philosophical concept of categories as the foundation of the various forms of knowledge. Dr O'Sullivan also hopes a monograph will develop out of his teaching on politics and visual culture.


Research Interests

A/P O'Sullivan's research interests include the history of ideas, particularly the history of philosophy and the history of political thought. He also works on the philosophy of history and political theory.
