Brief Introduction

Lionel Wee is a linguist in the Department of English Language & Literature, National University of Singapore. He is interested in language policy (especially in Southeast Asia), the grammar of Singapore English, metaphorical discourse, and general issues in sociolinguistics and pragmatics. His recent publications include articles in Journal of Pragmatics, Discourse Studies, Language in Society, Journal of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Journal of Multilingual & Multicultural Development. He was a member of the committee for Singapore's Speak Good English Movement, where he became particularly aware of the need to address public conceptions concerning the nature of language. He sits on the editorial boards of Applied Linguistics, English World-Wide and Multilingual Margins.

Graduate Supervision

I welcome postgraduate students interested in language policy, general issues in pragmatic and sociolinguistics. I am particularly interested in multidisciplinary work (e.g. the intersection between linguistics and social theory or urban studies0.

His research interests broadly include language policy and planning in Southeast Asia, the grammar of Singapore English, the relationship between metaphor and it discourse contexts, various issues in sociolinguistics and pragmatics.
