Current Research

 It is a standard assumption that grammaticalization involves context and is pragmatically motivated. In the past years, I have paid particular attention to the interaction between context, pragmatic inferring, and frequency in the diachronic development of Chinese grammatical items.  Recent years have witnessed an increasing awareness of the relevance of complex and schematic constructions  to grammaticalization as construction grammar has developed as a general approach to language. Accordingly, my current research projects involve the diachronic development of complex and schematic constructions.
